Why a drone survey

The safest, fastest way to know what your roof really needs

A traditional inspection means scaffolding or a roofer up a ladder — slow, disruptive and expensive before a single tile is touched. A drone changes that completely.

Genuinely safe

Nobody climbs on fragile 150-year-old slate. No ladders leaning on your gutters or stonework — the drone does the risky part from the air.

No scaffolding

Scaffolding to inspect can cost £600–£1,200 and take days to erect. The drone is up in minutes — you only pay for scaffold if the actual repair needs it.

Fast & tidy

Most surveys are done in around 30 minutes, with no mess and no disruption to your neighbours — ideal on a busy tenement street.

See the detail

4K imagery picks up a single slipped slate, a hairline crack in lead flashing or a failing chimney flaunching — the small things that become big leaks.

Every survey is carried out by a CAA-compliant, fully insured pilot — flown responsibly over Edinburgh's conservation areas.

  • Fixed, transparent quote

A written price for any recommended work — from a £180 minor repair up — with no surprises later.

  • Conservation notes

For listed & tenement roofs, guidance on what Historic Environment Scotland practice and any listed-building consent will require.

Why we survey from the air first

A quick look at how a drone survey compares to the traditional scaffold-or-ladder inspection.

  Castlerock drone survey Traditional inspection
Cost to inspect FREE £150–£1,200 (ladder or scaffold)
Time on site ~30 minutes Half a day to several days
Safety risk None — flown from the ground Working at height on fragile slate
Disruption to your street Minimal Scaffold, permits, pavement licence
Photo evidence you keep Yes — annotated 4K report Rarely
Good for listed & tenement roofs Ideal — no contact Access & consent headaches

Scaffolding is only ever needed for the repair itself, if the work calls for it — never just to look.

Common questions

Drone survey questions, answered

Is the drone survey really free?

Yes — completely. There's no charge and no obligation to book any work with us afterwards. We offer it because it's the honest way to price a job: we can see the whole roof properly, so the fixed quote we give you is accurate rather than guesswork from the pavement.

Do you need to put up scaffolding to inspect?

No. That's the whole point of the drone — we get a 4K camera over every ridge, valley and chimney without touching your roof. Scaffolding is only ever needed for the repair itself, and only if the specific work requires it. You'll never pay for scaffold just to have a look.

How long does it take and do I need to be home?

Most surveys take around 30 minutes. If the pilot can access your garden or the street with a clear line of sight to the roof, you don't need to be home — though many customers like to be there for a chat. We'll confirm all of this when we call you back.

Can you fly over a listed building or in a conservation area?

Yes. Our pilots are CAA-compliant and fully insured, and we fly responsibly across Edinburgh's conservation areas — New Town, Old Town, Stockbridge and beyond. A no-contact drone survey is actually the ideal way to inspect a fragile A or B listed roof, because nothing ever touches the historic fabric.

What if the weather's bad on the day?

Drones don't fly safely in high winds or heavy rain, so if the weather turns we'll simply reschedule to the next suitable slot — no fuss. If you've got an active leak and can't wait, ask about our emergency call-out (£120), where we'll make the roof safe first and survey once it's dry.

What happens after I get the report?

It's entirely your call. You can book the recommended work with us at the fixed price quoted, keep the report for your records or insurer, or use it to get a second opinion. There's genuinely no pressure — we'd rather earn your trust than push a sale.
